le mois doux

Finally, some sweet soul at the Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel had the courtesy to put an end to all the estival confusion: ignoring those doddering immortels at l'Académie française and their archaic (if not downright -gasp- provincial) "out", the CSA has pronounced the month of août, "ou."

Voilou!

"out" is provincial? but that's how I've pronounced it ever since I moved to france! solely on the basis of what I've heard the french say.

in high school I believe I learned it was "a-out" but I've never heard anyone here pronounce it that way.

so they may have cleared it up to "ou" but I don't think I'll adopt that pronunciation, as long as the provincials and the académie française is on my side.

that said, can we clear up the correct english pronunciation of the plural "euros"?

I've been pronouncing it "ou" - but by sheer luck. So much to learn, especially when they keep changing things (or clarifying)!

frankly, if "out" is good enough for the Académie, it's good enough for me! I'd be curious to see how the Loire natives pronounces it, since the "purest" form of French is supposedly based on this region's dialect.

Amy, your phonetic instincts are stronger than mine! I would stick with them, too, since the debate on this doesn't look to be settled anytime soon.
