Les Invisibles
Les Invisibles, a documentary by Sébastien Lifshitz, comes out in France today.
It's more than frustrating to watch Hollande backtrack on one of his campaign promises, legalising gay marriage. It's likely one of the progressive promises that got him into office, and now he's cowing to pressure from conservative mayors who balk at the idea of presiding at same-sex civil unions. Hollande's popularity has crashed in the past six months, and being wishy-washy about an issue that his party unanimously supported pre-election makes him look unfit to lead a secular nation.
(I'm getting really sick of journalists asking whether or not France is "ready" for legal same-sex marriage. Of course not everyone is ready to see LGBT rights broadened and politically recognized. If history teaches us anything, though, it's that human rights are not up for debate, period. Separate but equal is inhumane.)
