I fi, you fi

France is soon going to be one giant, pulsing hotspot. Since Delanoë vowed to transform Paris into the most "connected capital in the world" by deploying 400 (at last count) WiFi access points throughout the City of Light, it seems the entire administrative force is jumping on the band-width wagon (I know, I know - horrible). To wit, the RATP recently announced its plan to join forces with a private web management software editor to allow clients to access WiFi while hurtling through Paris' métro tunnels. For those who can wait to read their e-mail until surfacing from the underground, by June of this year, government buildings and some city parks and monuments will dole out WiFi waves to anyone able to hook up.

Locating the WiFi nearest you is only a few clicks away. The Journal du Net, a super geek publication that I now read religiously, maintains a yellow pages of all the hotspots in France: simply click on your department, or enter a region search, and scroll until you find the spot that's just right. (Caveat emptor: not all hotspots listed are free)

Need a hotel in La Bourbole with WiFi? Le Parc des Fées is happy to oblige.

Feeling antisocial but need to see and be seen? Haul your laptop along when you make an appearance at Club des Savoirs Vivre!

There are loads of other sites providing a similar service, some with a more global reach.

Some nerdy food for thought: almost any free hotspot search within the 75 pulls up hundreds of addresses for MacDo and Starbucks. Delanoë's dream of the "capital of connectivity" might have to come with fries.
