A piece of the Pont des Arts has fallen off, people. Yes, a chunk of the damn bridge finally buckled - in protest, I like to think - under the weight of one too many love locks. When is the city going to put a stop to all these ridiculous proclamations of love? This is not Rome!
We were in Paris a few weekends ago for a wedding and had to traverse the Pont des Arts to get to the reception. There were so many cadenas d'amour stacked under the railings, so many tourists taking pictures in front of them, and so many hawkers of padlocks + sharpies that it felt more like the base of the Eiffel Tower than the pretty wooden foot bridge where one could picnic on a clement summer evening. My inner-grump/spontaneous Paris picnic-er was not pleased. I am not alone.
