Café cliché

"No French person has ever walked anywhere with a coffee."

-- Rosecrans Baldwin, "Our French Connection"

This is true, with one exception. In Paris, sometime in 2004, a woman I worked with brought a coffee mug to the office one morning. Tongue-in-cheek, she announced to all of us that she was going to make the Americans feel at home by walking around the premises with her coffee cup in hand. Usually there was never anything actually in the mug, and - even better - she'd be holding a lit cigarette in her other hand, effecting a kind of schizo Ameri-Parisienne cliché.

Anyway, the above is a funny piece on the American-French hate-love affair.
