Lyon, pardi !

JB had a work engagement in Lyon on Friday, so Jacques and I tagged along to visit France's second-largest city.

Lovely Lyon, flanked by and flanking the Rhône and the Saône, about midway between Marseille and Paris, the ancient Roman post - still a flourishing, vibrant, culturally and financially rich city - is not so far away as I had imagined. After a scenic 4 hour drive, passing by Carcassonne, Avignon and the Rhône valley, we arrived in the city armed with recommendations for bouchons and larger-than-life-sized murals, dropped off our bags at our hotel on the Presqu'île and hit the ground toddling!

We trabouler'd in Vieux Lyon, ate way more than our appetites dictated at classic and modern bouchons, delighted in the Burgundian wines that we somehow tend to forget about out over in Languedoc-Roussillon, and marveled at references to Guignols in random places. At the Musée des Beaux-Arts, with its incredible Puvis de Chavannes mural that surrounds the top of the staircase, we happened upon a gorgeous conceptual creation that illuminated this piece by Eugène Carrière. The very friendly locals, almost vieille ecole in their politeness and civility, are an interesting contrast to the more boisterous Toulousain.

Perhaps I should add it to my New Year's Travel resolutions list?
Oh I so agree -- these photos are incredibly magical! And taken by a magical woman, at that.
